Anti-Cheating for Online Exams: Proctored Exams for Teachers
Quick answer: On rayQuiz, a proctored exam runs inside a class: students join a lobby with a code, the exam starts at the scheduled time, and the teacher monitors every student live. The system logs each tab switch, window blur, fullscreen exit and copy attempt, and locks the exam automatically on repeated violations. The teacher reviews the violation log and unlocks students one by one.
Layers of protection in an exam
Before the exam
- Lobby: the teacher clicks Open lobby (Mở phòng chờ) and students join with the room code or a QR code. The exam starts automatically at the scheduled time.
- Room password (optional): only students with the password can enter.
- Late join: off by default; when on, the teacher approves each late student.
During the exam
- Anti-cheat (on by default): records when a student leaves the tab, leaves the exam window or exits fullscreen.
- Automatic lock: exiting fullscreen, or clicking outside the window while in fullscreen, locks the exam at once; three repeated tab switches also lock it. The student continues only after the teacher unlocks.
- Blocked actions: copy, paste, cut, right-click and developer-tools shortcuts are blocked, and every attempt is logged.
- Shuffle questions and shuffle answers: each student gets a different order.
- Allow going back: turn off so students can only move forward.
- Allow device switching: off by default, so one account cannot take the exam on two devices.
On the teacher's monitoring screen
- Students grouped by status: not started, in progress, submitted, locked.
- How many students have violations, with each violation logged by severity.
- An unlock button for each locked student.
- A live leaderboard, early finish, and participant export.
- Auto-finish when everyone has submitted (on by default).
After the exam
- Scores and answers are hidden from students by default; the teacher decides whether to show the score on submit and the answers after the exam. Answers never open while anyone is still taking the exam.
- Each student's behaviour history stays in the class for later review.
How to run a proctored exam
The class tools are currently labelled in Vietnamese; the original labels are shown in brackets.
- Go to Classes, create a class and invite students by email or join link.
- In the class, click Create exam (Tạo bài thi), then pick the quiz, start time and end time.
- Under the exam rules (Cách làm bài), switch the options above on or off.
- Send the room code to the class. At exam time, open the Monitor page (Giám sát), click Open lobby (Mở phòng chờ) and watch.
Limits to keep in mind
A browser-based exam cannot stop every form of cheating, such as a second phone. These measures detect and reduce cheating; for high-stakes exams, combine them with in-room supervision.
Frequently asked questions
Will the teacher know if a student switches tabs? Yes. Every tab switch or window blur is written to the violation log and shown on the monitoring screen. Repeated violations lock the exam until the teacher unlocks it.
Can students take the exam on a phone? Yes. Students join with the code or QR code in a mobile browser. Tab and app switches are still recorded; fullscreen support depends on the phone's browser.
Does anything need to be installed? No. Students and teachers only need a web browser.
Are proctored exams included in the free plan? Proctored exams belong to Teacher Premium. Free teachers with a verified email can try one class (up to 30 students) and one proctored exam with every feature. See Pricing.
