IELTS Reading & Listening Test Maker for Teachers
Quick answer: rayQuiz lets teachers build online IELTS Reading, IELTS Listening and VSTEP.3-5 practice tests: reading passages shown side by side with the questions, note and form completion with word limits, a cap on how many times the audio can be played, and estimated band conversion. Build a test with AI from a ready-made format template, write it by hand with the :::passage syntax, or import it from a Word file.
Note: IELTS bands and VSTEP levels on rayQuiz are estimates from approximate conversion tables, not official exam results.
What an IELTS / VSTEP paper needs, and how rayQuiz handles it
| Requirement | In rayQuiz |
|---|---|
| Long passages with many questions | The passage (question group) stays pinned on the left with the questions on the right; on desktop the column width can be dragged |
| Note, form and table completion | Write the answer inside [[ ]] in the notes; every gap becomes its own 1-point question |
| Several accepted spellings | Separate them with |, e.g. [[24th April|24 April]] |
| "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER" | Set Max words per gap on the passage; numbers (24, £15) do not count against the limit |
| Audio played once or twice | Set a Play limit per part; the player has play/pause only, no seeking |
| Parts taken in order, no going back | Turn on Gate next part and turn off Allow going back within this part |
| Score conversion | Choose a Scoring option: IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training (estimated band), or VSTEP.3-5 (average of four skills mapped to levels 3–5) |
| Writing and Speaking | Essay questions show a live word count; Speaking questions record answers with preparation time; the teacher grades and confirms scores |
Option 1: Generate a test with AI from a format template
- Open AI quiz generator and go to the Template library.
- Pick IELTS Academic format practice, IELTS General Training format practice or VSTEP.3-5 format practice. Each template already defines parts, question counts, timing, play limits and scoring.
- Enter a topic or attach a document, then generate. Generation uses the account's AI credits.
- For listening parts, the AI writes a speaker-labelled script. In the passage editor, generate the audio from that script with AI voices (British or American English).
- Review each part in the Preview panel and save.
Option 2: Write by hand or import from Word
- In the editor, use Add passage, or type a
:::passageblock in the Editor tab. - Paste the reading text or the listening notes. Wherever a gap is needed, write the answer inside
[[ ]]. - Open the passage's Part settings to set the Skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), duration, play limit and max words per gap.
- For listening, paste a link to an audio file (mp3, wav) hosted elsewhere, or generate AI audio from a script as in Option 1. Uploading an audio file directly to a passage is not supported yet.
- In the editor, choose the right Scoring option.
Already have the test in Word? Word import keeps passage blocks and tables. For syntax details see Passages & Question Groups and the illustrated guide Listening gap-fill tasks.
Delivering the test
- Homework: students work within the time window you set.
- Proctored exam: the class joins a lobby with a code, the exam starts at the scheduled time, and the teacher monitors live with alerts when a student switches tabs. See Anti-cheating for online exams.
- Public link: share a practice test for self-study.
Frequently asked questions
Does rayQuiz include ready-made IELTS or VSTEP tests? It includes format templates that let the AI generate new tests following the IELTS and VSTEP.3-5 structure. Review and edit them before assigning. Community practice tests are in the Quiz library.
Can I upload an audio file for a listening part? Listening parts currently take a link to audio hosted elsewhere, or AI-read audio generated from a script. Direct audio upload is not available yet.
Are the bands identical to the real exam? No. IELTS bands and VSTEP levels are estimates from approximate conversion tables, meant for tracking progress, not a substitute for official results.
Can free teachers use it? Creating tests and sharing practice links works on the Free plan, which includes 30 AI credits a month. Classes and proctored exams belong to Teacher Premium; free teachers with a verified email can try one class (up to 30 students) and one proctored exam. See Pricing.
