Create tests

Build tests from a blueprint and your question bank

Tag questions by topic and cognitive level, set up a test blueprint, fill bank gaps with AI and build several equivalent test versions.

A test blueprint sets how many questions each topic contributes at each cognitive level. rayQuiz draws the questions from your own bank (or your organisation’s inside an organisation workspace) and from the curated rayQuiz bank, and builds versions that share the same structure. The feature appears once an administrator turns on "Test blueprints".

  1. 1

    Open Test blueprints

    Select "Test blueprints" in the sidebar. The page lists saved blueprints with their curriculum, subject, year level and question total. Select "New blueprint" to start, or "Topic tree" to browse and extend topics.

    Tip: The system topic tree covers Vietnamese Mathematics 10–12 and upper-secondary English (GDPT 2018), plus Australian Curriculum v9 Mathematics and English. Teachers can add their own branches; organisations can add branches shared with every member.

    Tag bank questions with a topic and cognitive level

    Open a quiz from your library in the editor. In the preview panel, select "Tag topic and level". Tick the questions to tag, choose a topic, a level scale and a level, then select "Apply". Save the quiz to keep the tags.

    Question 1. Which word is closest in meaning to "rapid"?
    A. slow
    *B. quick
    C. late
    D. calm
    * Topic: english.all.vocabulary
    * Level: Remember

    Tip: When importing from Word, add a "* Topic:" line with the topic code (copy it from the Topic tree page) and a "* Level:" line (for example Remember, Apply or DOK 2) under each question so it arrives already tagged.

    Set up the blueprint and check bank coverage

    Enter a name and choose the curriculum, subject, year level and level scale (Vietnam’s four cognitive levels, Bloom’s six levels or Webb’s DOK four levels). Select "Add topic" for each row, then enter a question count in each cell. Each cell shows how many matching questions your bank holds, and the summary above the table shows whether the bank covers the blueprint or which cells are short.

    Tip: Questions tagged with a subtopic count towards its parent. A row for "Functions" draws from every lesson in that unit.

    Fill bank gaps with AI

    When the bank is short, select "Fill gaps with AI". AI writes exactly the missing questions for each cell’s topic and level and saves them to a bank quiz kept with the blueprint, ready for your review. This uses AI credits in the same way as Create with AI; drawing from your bank is free.

    Tip: Review the AI bank quiz for content and level before you build the final tests.

    Build several test versions

    Select "Build tests", enter the number of versions (up to 8) and the question order: by level, easiest first, or by topic. Each version is saved as a draft quiz in your library with its topic and level tags, ready to edit, assign or run as an exam.

Frequently asked questions

Do the versions share questions?
rayQuiz prefers questions that earlier versions have not used. When a cell has only just enough questions, the versions share them in a different order. The larger the bank, the more the versions differ.
Are passage-based or grouped questions drawn into a blueprint?
The current release draws standalone questions only. Questions attached to a reading passage, audio or question group stay in their original quiz.
Which bank does a teacher in an organisation draw from?
In an organisation workspace, the blueprint draws from the organisation’s quizzes. In a personal workspace, it draws from the teacher’s own quizzes. Both can also use the rayQuiz question bank.
Where do questions come from if I have no quizzes yet?
Turn on "Also use the rayQuiz question bank" on the blueprint. rayQuiz provides a curated bank, tagged by topic and level and with worked explanations, for Australian Curriculum Mathematics and English Years 7–10 and the Vietnamese upper-secondary curriculum. Your own questions are always drawn first; the rayQuiz bank only fills what they cannot. Built tests are copies you can edit freely.
